Announcing my NaNoWriMo project

Hello everyone, long time no see…

My arm, which I hurt several weeks ago when I fell, is almost completely OK again and I can write with both hands. I’ve been working on and off on a science fiction story that never quite went where I wanted it to go. I took it to NaNoWriMo in 2015 and found it was total crap. Then it rested for two years, ready to be dumped. Last April I took it to the Camp NaNoWriMo and still found it crap although not all of it. I was ready to give up. Then I realized something which gave me a new way to look at it, and a new direction where the plot can go. It is difficult but I want to try it. So I want to rewrite the whole thing. During October I outlined and sorted information and now I’m ready to give the story one last chance. Here it is:

Immer’s Memoirs

A new, unexpected faction appears on a planet that has been shattered by catastrophe and war and where different groups of humans try to survive with dignity and respect for each other while battling an enemy that tries to control the world. Will the new faction tip the scales and help create a free society, or will it side with the self-proclaimed benevolent dictator who claims that only a united world under a strong leadership can thrive?

I’m getting excited and a bit scared. I’m not sure if I can pull it off. But… Nano usually gives me such a push for writing a lot that I’m quite hopeful that I produce something a bit less crappy than last time.

Anyone else from around here doing the Nano?

  1. I had wondered why we’d not seen a post from you for a while. Glad your arm is back in service.
The idea that zips through the aether to land in the writer’s head, all unexpected, is often the cure for the plot-constipation. I hope this turns out to be true for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Thank you. Yes, I’m feeling much better. But I’ve been lazy, I still owe you a reply on my last post. I think one of the problems with this story was that I couldn’t let go of chapters I had written before. So I ended up with three versions, none of them rounded. Off with them to the ideas box. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. No, the time comes when you have to be brutal. But don’t lose what you’ve written. Save everying before removing from the main body. Personally, I was glad I’d done that when the beta-readers and critiquers who crawled over and through my ‘Asaric Lies,’ declared I needed a more informative opening. As happens, I had written a more informative opening. But had subsequently deleted it. Now where was it? And as importantly, when was it? Well, I found it. Dated nine years previous.

          1. The remembering is the problem. I had changed my computer three times since I began writing Asaric Tales (haven’t quite attained Tolkein’s record yet). While now saved on USB sticks, previous saves were on DVDs, and before that on CDs, and before that, on the now inaccessible 3,5″ floppies.

    1. Ah, great. I’m gahlearner there, too, in case you want to send a message. ๐Ÿ™‚ I completely forgot everything and have to learn my way around on the Nano site again. Camp Nano is easier.

  2. I’m glad to hear you’re healing! Yep, I’m doing NaNo for the first time!!! I’m hoping it gives me a needed push to get a story out of my head and on paper. I ALSO gave out an adapted calendar to my Creative Writing kids (smaller word counts for them ๐Ÿ™‚ ) so if I crash, at least I’ll have company lol! Your premise sounds fascinating- best of luck!

    1. Hey, welcome to the club, I hope you’ll have just as much fun with it as I always had. It also can be a bit overwhelming, depending on how much time you invests on the site itself. But it’s also a great incentive. I’m gahlearner on the Nano site, too, so, If you want to write a message, go for it. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Glad to hear your arm is better! When I broke my arm a couple years ago it was such a nuisance to have to type one-handed; I remember how wonderful it felt to get back to normal again.

Your story idea is really gelling — what an interesting conflict! I would definitely want to keep reading that. Which side is your main character on, and what is his or her role in all of this? Looking forward to hearing more updates. Good luck with your writing!!!

  4. Thank you Joy. Luckily it was my left arm, with the right arm hurt I’d have been helpless.
The story… that synopsis is the effect of that little epiphany I had. All of a sudden I know what it’s about. Before that it was vague and a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I just hope I can bring it all together, and the world building, and the characters…
The main character is of the new faction. But there are important side-kicks and antagonists on all sides, and some switch sides, and some aren’t what they appear to be… you get the picture.
