I’m a bit stressed out from work at the moment, can’t focus on writing much. And I feel bad when I just post a story and can’t even reciprocate the comments I get. So I’ll post a bit more knitting and crocheting. That, and a few other things, is what I do when I don’t write or read.
Here’s what I knitted a few years ago, fingerless mittens that come especially handy when walking the dog. My hands are getting painfully cold fast, even if it’s not very cold outside, and these things keep them nice and warm and I still have the fingers free to give treats, grab the leash and such.
I had some old yarn lying around, not enough to make a sweater, but enough for this. I also crocheted a cloche hat, which I also love to wear on dog walks, because it keeps me warm and also protects my glasses from the rain.
I really hope I’ll find the energy to get back to writing, but right now I need another break.
Introduction to graphic design is still far too much fun. I talked about this last week already. I’ll probably talk about it next week, too.
I’ve done my homework and designed away. I also made images for my four themes. Feedback of peers is good, there’s a friendly sharing and learning atmosphere. And, since there isn’t much else to say, I’ll just show what I did. Here are the four theme designs. I’m certain there’ll be changes over time, but for now, I like them.

What does she want with graphic design? You ask after having seen my list of courses about space, and writing. The short answer is: I can’t give up dabbling in artsy stuff even though I lack practice and knowledge. I like good design, pretty fonts, colours, shapes– and wish I knew the secret of what makes design good, bad, or mediocre–which is not the same as taste. And so I’ve signed up for this self-paced course on Open Learning: Introduction to Graphic Design.
The course features the free online software Canva. You find a multitude of layouts, stock images, fonts, shapes, lines there, and much of it is free. The course–I’ve only taken the first two sessions so far, features the program and shows what you can do with it. You are also invited to share your designs and discuss with your peers. There are exercises, but there is no peer-reviewed assignment, at least I didn’t find one. And this is something I already miss. Today’s assignment: read six posts written in response to yesterday’s prompt, and leave comments on at least two of them. — Done now, there are so many interesting blogs out there–and so professional–feeling shy again. Did comment, will follow up on at least one of them.
You can find the part about the truth serum in the midst of yesterday’s meandering thoughts, but it was rather short, to the point, and not really fit for any follow up (although I still would like to have that answer). But anyway, in case someone from Blogging 101 comes here looking for an interpretation of the daily prompt: here’s one I have a bit more to say about than the Truth Serum:
When reading for fun, do you usually choose fiction or non-fiction? Do you have an idea why you prefer one over the other?

Isaac Asimov was a biochemist and one of the ‘old’ masters of ‘hard’ science fiction. He wrote fiction, non fiction, and was an advisor for Star Trek. If you can have it all, why even chose between fiction and non fiction? For me, there’s an answer under the cut.

Again, I have to skip, because I did that when I started this blog. I love trying out themes and playing around with the options the different layouts offer. I played with the themes again when I did the branding exercise for Creativity, Innovation and Change. And so, today, I shall chat about why I chose the theme I use, and what will take up much of my time over the next few weeks. Because something happened which may be insignificant to you, but is very uplifting and encouraging to me.

I’m combining that with an assignment from English Composition II on coursera. I’m not submitting the assignments, because I don’t have the time to keep up with it right now, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t write at least part of it. The assignment there is:
Who I Am as a Writer with a Cause: An Autobiographical Narrative.

I can’t believe, this is the last exercise already. This course was fun and it just flew by.
And it will give me the last certificate I’ll probably ever get from coursera since rumour has it that they don’t give out free certificates of achievement any longer. That seems to have been a rumour from angry participants in a course that doesn’t give out free certificates any longer. So there may be more. Not that I need them, but they are nice and always an incentive.
But anyway, back to Creativity, Innovation and Change. The exercise requires:
This exercise is about BRANDING!
BRANDING is about what you and your project or product or service do and stand for.
BRANDING is many things, such as name, logo, product or service, marketing and many more.
With this exercise, we want you to make a tangible, authentic and relevant item that will be part of your Branding, for example, a logo, an ad and a website or all of the above.
If you don’t have a project, you can draw a color-filled personal logo that represents your true self or selves, or you can write a poem that represents what you stand for in your life and/or career.
You can use different media to produce your branding item, such as drawings, writings, music, video, etc.

This assignment almost made me give up on the assignments. But I’d hate that. Once I start something ( other than a multiple choice quiz), I want to finish it.
The requirements were:
1. Watch three possible pains/needs and try to understand them thoroughly.
